Have you ever participated in a school competition? If so, talk about one.

Collaborative reading of the conversation between Emma and Jake about tomorrow's spelling bee competition at school.

Emma: Are you ready for the spelling bee tomorrow?

Jake: Not really. I’m nervous about the words.

Emma: That’s how I feel! Some of them are so tough.

Jake: You're right. But practice helps.

Emma: That's true. I’ve been studying all week.

Jake: I’m sure about that. You’ll do great!

Emma: I think so. What about your words?

Jake: I don’t agree; I think I’ll mess up.

Emma: Yes, but don’t you think you could do it well?

Jake: I suppose so. Maybe I just need more confidence.

Emma: Exactly! Just remember to breathe and have fun.

Jake: Thanks, Emma. I’ll try to keep that in mind!
